How to separate salt and pepper?

So think about this- you accidentally tipped some salt inside pepper (in an approximate ratio of 2:1) and have to separate it (in my case it wasn't an accident!). Now how would you do it? There are multiple ways.

The most obvious way to separate them is by using static electricity; you can use a comb, balloon, a plastic spoon, or any such objects and rubbing it on some wool, cotton, hair or anything that possesses the property to transfer negative electrons. Here is how it works- the pepper is lighter than the salt. When you rub the comb/ balloon/plastic spoon the negative particles get transferred into the comb/ balloon/plastic spoon and when you place it slightly above the pile. If you keep it too close even the salt will stick; if you keep it too far nothing will stick. The pepper and salt are positively charged and that's is why they come together. But this method gets boring after a while.

You can put the mixture in water and see that the pepper is floating and the salt has gone to the bottom of the container. Now if you put oil on your finger in the oil you can make the pepper go away from your finger. Once you have gathered it in one corner you can use a fishnet or a sieve to gather it.

Another way of doing it is that you put a speaker or a vibrating plate under the salt and pepper- depending on the density of the salt and pepper they would jump differently. You can try playing different frequencies with a tone generator (http://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ this is the one I used) try playing some frequencies. At certain frequencies the salt starts forming patterns (this experiment is called chladni plate- I will write about it later) and the pepper will bounce around randomly- so we can easily separate the salt and pepper.

While these are the most prominent ways that come to my head, there are lots of ways to achieve the same results. I will be writing about some more in a while- but if you can think of any please email me at jairelan.2005@gmail.com or leave it in the comments below.
